A complex detective crime thriller, which captures the reader’s curiosity, Serial Rites (Atlanta Homicide Squad Book 3) is a surprisingly good read.
The Good
- Interesting characters
- All the characters, including the killer, were engaging.
- The main protagonist was off-putting (clearly not perfect), which was refreshing. He was the most complex character and well done.
- The spiritual/Biblical element had a nice tie into the book.
- A dark story
- I enjoyed the elements of total chaos and confusion we the reader were thrown into.
- The title headings, which showed the location and time among other aspects, helped setup the book as a diary/journal or police report.
- Easy to continue reading because “chapters” were short and sometimes only gave small pieces of a puzzle.
The Bad
- It was often easy to lose one’s place in the story.
- Who said what?
- Who is this chapter focusing on?
- Were the characters using humor?
The Unsure*
- Getting into the mind of a tortured detective was sometimes difficult to handle although refreshing.
- This isn’t a cookie-cutter Christian book, but a dark story with characters fighting through real struggles.
- You may think this story as too dark (i.e., not a comfy mystery).
*My opinion: what I didn’t care for or do not prefer. This will not lower a rating unless it overly distracts from the story.
An engrossing story, I recommend this psychological thriller Serial Rites (Atlanta Homicide Squad Book 3) by Cortez Law III.
