A dystopian novel with an unlikely Amish heroine, The One by RD Palmer—a former software developer for robots—is a gripping tale.

The Good

  • Novel is set an historical fiction with one character writing the “history.”
    • I enjoyed how the novel began.
  • Good writing
    • Little editing issues
  • Good main character
  • A book to make you think
    • Could artificial intelligence really take over?

The Bad

  • Difficult to imagine with sometimes few descriptions.
    • How can you make us as the reader understand what Naomi, for example, is going through?
      • What does she see, feel, taste, touch, sense?
      • Using more “show” and less “tell” could help or using “show” with “tell.”
        • For example: “Jeff felt sick to his stomach. Blood was everywhere and covered the grass.” vs. “Jeff collapsed to the ground and gripped his stomach. Blood was everywhere. It lingered in the air and caused the grass to seemingly change colors.
  • An overdependence on dialogue.
    • There were whole chapters with little narration.
        •

The Unsure*

  • N/A

*My opinion: what I didn’t care for or do not prefer. This will not lower a rating unless it overly distracts from the story.

While it has its issues, I enjoyed reading The One by RD Palmer and look forward to his future novels in this trilogy.
