A good book for personal devotion/life changing course correction, Relax Be Free Enjoy God by M. Allen Thompson is gospel focused book and our deep need to rest in him.
The Good
- Consistent biblical message
- Each chapter focuses and builds on the message of Christ’s finished work.
- I like how the chapters break down
- Five sections: content, bringing it all together, reflection questions, activation exercises, and further resources
- I enjoyed the further resources because, instead of the citation resources at the end of the book, we can dive in deeper and see what types of books Thompson uses.
- Five sections: content, bringing it all together, reflection questions, activation exercises, and further resources
- I agree with most of this author’s assessments and while not a stipulation for a positive review, it’s pleasing to know other people believe in resting in the gospel.
The Bad
- I often found the activation exercise to be cringeworthy especially in the earlier chapters.
- How does a person know the will of God? What if a person reading this book does not read God’s Word? If they don’t use the Bible as their ultimate guild, how can they have a right, pure, Godly, “experience?”
- How can a person imagine what God would say if they don’t really know (I mean really, really know) how God responds to them? Yes, I understand that the content section is to focus a person on the activation section, but why not use the Bible to further hammer the point into the readers’ mind?
- I would recommend, for example: read 1st Peter 1:3-9 and journal what God says about you. How does this change your thought patterns?
The Unsure*

*My opinion: what I didn’t care for or do not prefer. This will not lower a rating unless it overly distracts from the story.
Although I have some hesitancy with the activation section in this book Relax Be Free Enjoy God, I still found the book to be a great reminder of the gospel and I highly recommend.
