Captives (Mud, Rocks, and Trees) by R. A. Denny is becoming much more complicated, the story is still about uniting seals, but the tale expands.
Captives (Mud, Rocks, and Trees), book 3, R. A. Denny

The Good

  • The unfolding story captivates.
    • The characters, the world, and the plot increasingly develop.
    • The main characters quickly need to grow up.
  • Depravity creeps into this book much more than the other two. This may be strange for me to write this as a positive attribute to the book, but I believe it creates a more believable world.
    • Crude language, violence, slavery, idolizing, molestation
    • Realistic world with fallen beings.
      • Not everyone follows the one god Adon.
  • Great writing, even better than the first two books in the series.
  • Complex characters like Metlan, which cause myself to question whether of not I agree with the character’s actions.
    • For example: Metlan is not good or bad.
  • Writing in different points of view based on which character is the focal point.
    • I’m sure the first two books of the series is written in distinct points of view, but I didn’t realize the point of view switch until this book.
      • Preference: first person writing tends have more of a negative connotation with people than third person, but I enjoy the first person perspective more than the third-person writing in this book.

The Bad

  • N/A

The Unsure*

  • While I enjoy realistic world settings, this book may not be for everyone because of depravity shown through in this book.

*My opinion: what I didn’t care for or do not prefer. This will not lower a rating unless it overly distracts from the story.

A great continuation to the series, check out “Captives (Mud, Rocks, and Trees)” and the series on Amazon.
